Course Description:

Social Studies 6 Part 2 focuses on the Age of Discovery through the modern day. Students will be introduced to the early civilizations of the Americas and Europe during the Middle Ages. Students will then enter the Renaissance and Reformation periods in Europe and will move on to study the rise of monarchies and the English, American, and French revolutions. Finally, students will study World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and the world since 1945.
It is recommended that students successfully complete Social Studies 6 Part 1 or equivalent course work before enrolling in this course.

Unit 1:

This unit covers the early civilizations of the Americas, including the Incas, Mayans and Aztecs. This unit also will take the student to the Mound Builders of North America and show the daily life of the plain Indians as well as the Ancestral Puebloans. Next Unit 1 travels to Ancient Asia, including the Golden Age of China, Medieval Japan, the Great Mughal Empire in India. This unit finishes with a trip back to Europe, showing Europe in the Middle Ages, including lessons on Feudalism, the Catholic Church, the Rise of Cities, the Crusades, and the Power of the King.

The learner will:

Explain where the Eastern Mound Builders lived and why.
Compare and contrast the empires of the Tang and Song dynasties.

Compare and Contrast the different Crusades and list the effects the Crusades had on life in Europe.
Unit 2:

This unit will cover the Renaissance and the Reformation, including lessons on Martin Luther and the spread of the Reformation throughout Europe. Next this unit covers European exploration in both Africa and Asia, including India, China, and Japan. Finally, this unit will cover European expansion into both Africa and the Americas, including an expanding Spanish Empire, the economic system of the Spanish colonies, the colonization of North America, interactions with Native Americans, and the expansion of the slave and triangular trade.

The learner will:

Tell where the Renaissance began and why.
Describe European encounters with China and Japan between 1600 through 1700.

Describe the slave trade in Africa and how the triangular trade worked.
Unit 3:

This unit will extensively cover the rise of Monarchies, including divine-right theory, absolute monarchies, and the limited monarchy of England. Secondly, this unit covers the Revolutions throughout the World, including the American, French, and English Revolutions. The learner will see the rise of Napoleon, the Enlightenment as well as the early Industrialization and Imperialism, Nationalism and Expansionism throughout the world.

The learner will:
Describe how Napoleon rose to power in France and how he finally lost power.
Describe the events of the English Civil War and the significance of the Glorious Revolution.
Explain how changes in Europe in the early 1800s led to arise of nationalism.
Unit 4:

This unit will cover the lessons on both World Wars, the Russian Revolution, as well as the Great Depression, Imperialism in Japan, the rise of Fascism in Italy and Nazism in Germany following World War I, and the Cold War. Finally, this unit covers the World today, including lessons on 20th Century Europe and North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and the World in a New Century.
