American Literature Part 1

Course Description:

In American Literature Part 1, students are invited to travel through the various cultural periods of American literature. Students will explore American literary traditions of the nineteenth century and will study the darker side of Romanticism while exploring the horror story genre. They will read selections from Edgar Allan Poe, including “The Raven,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and “Masque of the Red Death.” This course will also examine literature from the Civil War Era; stories of slavery such as an excerpt from the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass; and literature from the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1800s. Students will read and analyze samples of several authors’ contributions to American literature, such as Walt Whitman’s “A Sight in Camp in the Daybreak Gray and Dim,” and will also study post-Civil War literature pertaining to Native Americans, pioneers, settlers, and women. Students will complete the course with a deeper understanding of the major contributions literature has made in the development of our country.
It is recommended that students successfullly complete English 10 or equivalent course work before enrolling in this course.
