Course Description:

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Photographs play an important role in our world today. We photograph to preserve memories, document events, and create artistic works. This course introduces you to the basics of photography, including camera functions and photo composition. You will learn what it takes to create a good photograph and how to improve photographs of animals, people, and vacations. You will also begin working with your photographs using photo-editing software. Through a variety of assigned projects, you will engage your creativity by photographing a range of subjects and learning to see the world through the lens of your camera.

The student will: understand the term photography; explore the early history of photography; discuss how cameras work and the process of transferring images from a camera to a computer; discuss the basic functions and features of point-and-shoot cameras; understand how to care for your camera; understand the difference between good photographs and great photographs; discuss the purpose of photographs; experience the use of art and design in your images; identify the elements of a great photograph; create a photograph that uses various elements to draw attention to the subject of a photograph; explore the use of the rule of thirds and framing in a photograph; learn about changing a three dimensional scene or object into a two dimensional image; work with foreground, middleground, and background to produce an impressive image; identify common digital image file types and the good and bad points of each; discuss managing digital files and photo-editing functions; learn more about how to improve your vacation photographs, and next time, the viewer of your photos will want to see more; identify common problems in photographing animals; discuss how to photograph birds and pets; discuss how lighting can affect photographs of people in this unit; discuss tips for improving images of people; identify some of the pros and cons of posed and candid photographs; discuss self-portraits and how to create unique self-images; discuss photography etiquette; understand some of the laws that influence and affect photography; explain to someone else how to print a photo; discuss displaying your photography.

In order to be successful in our program, it is important for the student to remain in constant communication with the online instructor. The online instructor will be communicating with the student 1-2 times per week. Communication between the student and online instructor will be phone, email, texting, and/or discussion boards. Online instructors provide families with their weekly office hours and My Virtual Academy is open Monday – Thursday from 8 AM – 8 PM, Friday from 8 AM – 4 PM and Saturday from 8AM – 2 PM with staff available to answer questions/concerns. Messages received after hours will be returned the next school day. Parents/Guardians/Students will have access to the curriculum and gradebook 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

My Virtual Academy Tech Support is available Monday – Thursday, 8 AM – 8 PM, Friday 8 AM – 4 PM, and Saturday 8 AM – 2PM.
