Course Description:
This course is the second in a two-semester sequence designed to further develop students’ reading, writing, and analytical skills. The semester centers on two major themes, Survival and Discovery, through which students explore essential questions that deepen their understanding of literature and informational texts. Students engage with a variety of works, including major texts, short stories, informational articles, poetry, and informational videos. Writing assignments address multiple purposes and audiences, with major projects including a research paper and a narrative essay. To strengthen their command of language conventions, students participate in focused grammar challenges that build understanding of key concepts and support mastery of their application in writing. Throughout the course, students continue to refine critical reading strategies, such as using graphic organizers to identify and analyze key ideas and summarizing to monitor comprehension. They also expand their understanding of literary and rhetorical techniques, including characterization, allusion, diction and word choice, setting, and other devices that contribute to meaning and purpose.

Note: Units 1-3 will study Elie Wiesel’s Night and apply a variety of literary elements and skills, including the writing of a research paper, in the context of the theme of survival. Unit 4 will study two short stories, Anton Checkov’s “Talent” and Jack Finney’s “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pockets” in order to apply literary elements and skills in the context of themes such as talent vs. skill; cause and effect; and goal-setting and decision making. Units 5-7 will study Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and apply a variety of literary elements and skills, including the writing of a narrative essay, in the context of the theme of discovery.
