Algebra 1B (Competency-based)

Course Description:

This course is the second in a two-course sequence. In the course, students will learn about algebraic concepts such as integers, linear equations, inequalities and factoring. As students work through each interactive lesson, they will have the opportunity to complete several self-check activities and journal entries. Ultimately, this course will assist students in developing fundamental algebraic skills that will allow them to use problem-solving strategies in real-world situations as well as using graphing technology to interpret, represent and communicate mathematical concepts.
This course utilizes the same lesson content and assessments from our standard high school Algebra 1 course, but it incorporates three important elements of a competency-based learning model. Firstly, it aligns each lesson and assessment activity to relevant Michigan academic content standards for high school mathematics. Secondly, it promotes learning for mastery by permitting multiple avenues and/or attempts at demonstrating mastery within assessments, allowing students to demonstrate growth in their learning over time. Finally, it utilizes the Learning Outcomes features within our learning management system (LMS) in order to report out each student's performance on individual competencies correlated to groups or domains of important content standards in order to assess a student's level of competency on these key skills, in addition to providing students a traditional overall score (i.e., a final percentage of total points earned in the course).
